I have known Richard Thomas for more than 40 years, and I can think of no one better suited to serve as Mayor of the City of Owen Sound.

 

Throughout his eight years on council, Richard consistently brought creative solutions to complex issues, including the municipal accommodation tax on short-term rentals. He served on numerous portfolios and committees, including Corporate Services, Community Services, and Operations, and has a strong understanding of municipal government.

 

Beyond Council, Richard has shown strong leadership, including 20 years as chair of the Owen Sound and North Grey Public Library Board. In 2014, he stepped forward to lead the community-backed volunteer effort that saved the Owen Sound Marine and Rail Museum. He has also supported many community engagement initiatives involving the hospital, Georgian College, the River District, school councils, the tourism council, and the art gallery.

 

Richard is likely one of the most knowledgeable people on the history of this community. He is an award-winning author of several books on Owen Sound’s broader history as well as specific aspects of community life.
